Mixtape Monday: Kilo Kish

Kilo Kish, new band of the day

Over the past year, you’ve probably heard the term “cloud rap” and reacted with either a cringe or a downloading spree. While I understand both reactions, it’s become pretty easy to distinguish the talented acts from the lazy ones. The latter rely on repetitive ideas, using AIM-speak and memes in a way that’s supposed to be stupidly smart but mostly come off as boring within three songs. Kilo Kish, though, is different, applying a specific weirdness to her songs, whether she’s taking on the persona of a  stalker or winking party anthems. Her sound has been under the radar by hip-hop blog standards, but this has changed with last week’s release of K+.

With production from heavy-hitters like SBTRKT and Earl Sweatshirt and guest spots from Flatbush Zombies and (sigh) Childish Gambino, this thing was too star-studded not to blow up. Unlike most overnight hip-hop stars, though, Kish has more than deserved her accolades. It’s strangely engaging, conversational, and unsettling all at once. Get on this now, guys. You can download K+ over at Kish’s site.
