Mixtape Monday: The Underachievers

For the most part, the east-west divide in hip-hop is a really strange one these days. Not in the sense that it was way back in the day, but mostly an aesthetic difference. Here in New York, rappers like A$AP Rocky try to go for a loud party sound and obsess over fashion for press photos, while rappers like Main Attrakionz go for a laid-back cloud rap vibe. Each has their own appeal, but few rappers have tried to bridge the gap. Enter today’s mixtape Monday entry, the Underachievers.

Based in New York and signed to Flying Lotus’s future-leaning Brainfeeder label, the Underachievers go for a best-of-both-worlds scenario, spitting out a raw New York flow and giving off chill Cali vibes on a song-by-song basis. Moreover, they avoid the cliches of both on their debut mixtape, Indigoism, not coming off as backpackers or scenesters or pandering specifically to indie kids. Instead, these kids care about rap, about rhymes, and it rules. Check it out and download below.
