The Future Is Now – The French Express Essential Mix

If you paid frighteningly close attention to my top 100 of 2012, you’d notice that dance label French Express managed to snag three spots on the list. They seemingly came out of nowhere, but by the end of the year they’d manage to become one of my favorite labels. It’s rare for such a focused label to feel so accessible, but French Express packs a potent punch: built off of a disco foundation, each artist seems to dip that sound into a cocktail of house, ’90s R&B, and techno for the perfect dancefloor blend. I thought I was (relatively) alone in geeking out over acts like Jonas Rathsman or future crossover Perseus, but having gone to their first proper party in Brooklyn with in a totally crammed Brooklyn Bowl, the secret’s finally out.

If that night didn’t make it official, this weekend certainly did. BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix series is a must-listen for dance fans, and French Express have been chosen to ring in the new year for Pete Tong and company. Dance music is about to have a special moment, you can feel, just from listening to Rathsman and Pereseus spin their personal vision thanks to everyone from Julio Bashmore to Aalyiah. It may be Monday, but it’s time to groove. Steam and download the essential mix below!
